SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission is set to make history with the first private spacewalk. The mission, led by Shift4 Payments CEO Jared Isaacman, aims to reach a peak altitude of 870 miles, deeper into space than any other manned mission in over half a century. The crew will be composed entirely of non-professional astronauts and will wear newly developed SpaceX extravehicular activity (EVA) suits for the historic spacewalk. The craft will briefly enter the Van Allen radiation belt on the first day of the mission, posing potential health risks due to high-energy charged particles.

Weather constraints have caused multiple delays in the mission, which will not dock with the International Space Station and requires favorable weather conditions for both launch and splashdown. The team underwent more than two years of training, including simulations, skydiving, centrifuge training, scuba diving, and mountain climbing, in preparation for the mission.

Isaacman reportedly invested around $200 million in the project, and the quartet comprises mission pilot Scott Poteet, mission specialist Sarah Gillis, and mission specialist and medical officer Anna Menon. The Polaris Dawn mission is the first of three missions under the Polaris program, a collaboration between Isaacman and SpaceX. The mission also includes testing laser-based satellite communication with SpaceX's Starlink constellation and conducting 36 scientific experiments, including tests with contact lenses embedded with microelectronics to monitor changes in eye pressure and shape.
