Vincent Honoré, a curator at the MO.CO Montpellier museum, tragically took his own life in November 2023. A French government agency has concluded that his suicide should be classified as a 'workplace accident', potentially opening up the museum to criminal prosecution. The investigation revealed messages between Honoré and a friend expressing feelings of being 'trapped' by the institution and suspicion of a 'hidden demotion' shortly before his death.

Honoré had an illustrious career, working at prestigious institutions such as Palais de Tokyo in Paris and Tate Modern in London before joining MO.CO in 2019. His time at MO.CO was marked by turbulence, including the removal of founding director Nicolas Bourriaud and his replacement with Numa Hambursin, a move that sparked controversy and protests.

Colleagues of Honoré alleged that he was marginalized and mistreated, citing instances where he was disinvited from events and not allowed to speak at show openings. The museum has rejected the findings of the report and plans to file an appeal, claiming that a survey of staff mental health showed high levels of satisfaction.

In light of this tragic event, it is important to remember the importance of mental health support. Organizations such as Samaritans in the UK and Ireland, and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the US, provide essential crisis support for those in need.
