Rehana Zaman has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Jarman Award, receiving a prize of GBP£10,000. The award, which is given to contemporary artists working in film, is run in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery and Barbican. Zaman emerged as the winner from a shortlist that included Ayo Akingbade, Andrew Black, Julianknxx, Sophie Koko Gate, and Karen Russo. The films by all the shortlisted artists will be screened continuously at the Whitechapel Gallery on 25 and 26 November.

Zaman's films were praised by the jury for their alternative ways of storytelling through collaboration and material experimentation. The jury also appreciated the humanity in Zaman's work, which navigates issues of social justice and allows viewers to experience resilience, joy, and community in the face of hostile policies impacting the individuals portrayed in her films. The jury consisted of Matthew Barrington, Cinema Curator at Barbican; Shaminder Nahal, Head of Specialist Factual at Channel 4; artist Michelle Williams Gamaker; and Lila Rawlings, Head of Creative: Film and Television at Esperanto Filmoj.

The Jarman Award has been presented since 2008 and has previously been awarded to artists such as Grace Ndiritu, Jasmina Cibic, Hetain Patel, and Daria Martin. In 2020, the entire shortlist was jointly awarded in solidarity with the artistic community facing economic challenges due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
