Dr. Mariët Westermann has been appointed as the director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, becoming the first woman to lead the institution since it opened in 1959. In her new role, she will oversee the foundation, the museum in New York, as well as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Dr. Westermann, currently serving as the vice chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, brings a wealth of experience in navigating multiple stakeholders and critical issues across different geographies. While not a professional museum director, she has a strong background in art and culture, having previously held positions at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Dr. Westermann expressed her honor in joining the Guggenheim and emphasized the institution's mission to create opportunities for people to engage with modern and contemporary art. However, she will also face challenges such as addressing delays in the opening of the Abu Dhabi branch and addressing internal issues within the New York institution. Dr. Westermann will assume her new role on June 1, 2024.
