NC State University has developed a fabric-based sensor using embroidery techniques and machine learning. The sensor, integrated into clothing, can control electronic devices through touch. It consists of an embroidered pressure sensor powered by triboelectricity and a microchip to process the data collected. Creating the three-dimensional structure of the sensor was challenging, but a spacer was used to control the gap between the layers. Machine learning algorithms are employed to differentiate gestures for various functions and filter out unintentional inputs. The researchers demonstrated the sensor's capabilities by connecting it to a mobile app via Bluetooth, enabling functions such as music control, password input, and video game control.
